Indonesian Tsunami Disaster 2004 Christmas Eve Quake Forshadows Boxing Day Quake A precursor to the Sumatran Quake was the large quake
(8.1 on the Richter scale) which struck on Christmas eve, between Tasmania
and New Zealand, near an underwater geological feature called the Macquarie
Rise near Macquarie Island. Experts said that the quake was not a direct
trigger to the quake in Sumatra two days later but had the potential
to speed up the release of energy of the later one.

Furthermore, the Mars/IC line of the Macquarie Rise Quake runs
straight through the epicentre of the Sumatran Quake that occurred
two days later. The Uranus line also runs up the east coast of Sumatra. Sumatran Quake: Boxing Day 2004
Chiron-Saturn Opposition
Chiron in Capricorn is almost exactly opposite Saturn
in Cancer by only 21’ of arc. Much has been written about Saturn in
Cancer in previous newsletters of 2004, pointing to such factors as
the consolidation of resources and the difficulty of emotional expression.
Yet the major factor relates to the family of Humanity and the sacrifices
that we are required to make to each other, as this much quoted passage
attests: The last
line, ‘salvage the lives with which it had an affinity’, may be particularly
relevant now as the rest of the world responds to the plight on a scale
hitherto never seen. Astrologer Malvin Artley has referred to this opposition
as ‘a heart-break aspect’ and further states: Chiron in Capricorn relates amongst other things to the healing of the skeletal structure of the body, not unlike Saturn in Cancer which can be very bony. The tectonic plates of the Earth are like a skeletal structure, vertebrae interacting with one another and occasionally grinding together. Hence the almost exact opposition aspect between these two planets reflected the tension of forces under the Earth – Mother Earth (Cancer).Capricorn rising represents the organisational forces that need to be brought into action, whilst Saturn opposing from Cancer, the providing of shelter and the feeding of many thousands – in the short term and perhaps up to five years. Saturn opposite the rising sign also represented the slow response by many nations to the disaster, such as Capricorn-ruled India (personality). On the other hand, Capricornian Australia was one of the first nations to lend a hand and pledge long term support. During the days after the tsunami Australia had its Federation anniversary which puts its Capricorn Sun in the ninth house of foreign affairs. Moon Void-of-Course [5]When the Moon is about to change signs and makes no aspect to any other planets before it does so, it is said to be void-of-course - symbolically a ‘lack of connection’. Moon can be void-of-course when in the last degree of a sign and about to change signs. Astrologers advise not to execute any activity or plans at this time. The last degree of the Moon in mutable signs has been noted in this author’s earthquake researches to be quite common. The mutable signs and particularly Gemini have an unstable quality, whilst the rapidly orbiting Moon has a powerful gravitational effect upon the oceans of the Earth. The Sumatra Quake Moon was 28 Gemini 11 and by the time the tsunami had finished its destruction in Thailand and Sri Lanka, the Moon was in the last degree of Gemini.[6] As the Moon changed signs it made an exact quincunx aspect to Mars, one of the major significators of the quake. The Sabian Symbol for the last degree of Gemini is
“A parade of bathing beauties before large beach crowds” referring no
doubt to the many holiday makers in the tsunami affected regions. Rudhyar
mentions in his commentary that this symbolism refers to the time of
the summer solstice, which of course it was on December 24-26.[7] This disaster struck about 12 hours before the exact full moon time – Moon in Cancer and Sun in Capricorn. As students of the mysteries know, the full moon period is around two and a half days either side of the exact moment, so this occurred right in the middle of the most powerful period. Again the physical gravitational forces of a full moon must be considered important, but also the fact that the event occurred in such a culminating period of the year, materially and spiritually. Millions around the world who were enjoying their holiday break were impressed powerfully by the plight of other nations that they may not normally think about or even realise existed in many cases. express the true spirit of Christmas. Capricorn is a sign of sometimes severe testings and ultimately initiation into the greater mysteries of being. Humanity is certainly being tested in their response to this disaster, amongst other things. Aries Equinox Chart 2004 Astrologically, from the global perspective, the disaster may be looked for in various charts, but particularly in the Aries Equinox chart for 2004. (March 20, 2004. 6.48 am Greenwich) This chart has a remarkable grand cross in cardinal signs, with Sun in Capricorn opposite Saturn in Cancer, criss-crossed by Mars in Aries and Libra rising. The former three planets are all in the tenth degree of cardinal signs, making the tension of forces most acute. Moon square Pluto Progression Techniques From the equinox on March 20 to December 26 elapsed 281 days, which happens to be the human gestation period. If 281 days is multiplied by 0.985626. the amount of degrees is obtained to advance the ascendant or any planet around the wheel. In this case it is 277 degrees which advances the Aries ingress Sun at 0 Aries 00 to 7 Capricorn, just a few degrees after the Sun in the Sumatran Quake. Likewise if the Moon is advanced the same amount, it stops at 29 Sagittarius - a degree of mutable signs that is sensitive to quakes. Mars square Uranus As mentioned earlier, Mars is square to Uranus. If 277 degrees are counted from Mars in late Taurus, it falls just near Uranus in Pisces by two degrees. It is the Mars square Uranus aspect coming to fruition. This is most significant data and useful in the predictive side of astrology. Also important in the Aries ingress/equinox chart is Neptune – lord of tsunamis and dispositor of the Pisces Moon, at the point of a T-square to Venus and the nodal axis. (See later Varuna and Neptune) United Nations Horoscope Much has also been written about the UN horoscope in previous newsletters in 2004, mainly on the theme of the UN’s second Saturn return at this time. (See Libra 2004 Newsletter, part of which is reproduced here) This is a critical year for the United Nations, reformulating its Security Council structure during a time when two major astrological events are occurring – its second Saturn Return and Jupiter Return. The tsunami event and its aftermath will be the U.N.’s major testing during this period. The second Saturn return will last until about June 2005. Within this window of opportunity, the U.N. will also go through its Jupiter return, with three major hits to natal Jupiter starting in November 2004 and completing in July 2005. Hence we have a nine month gestation period wherein a U.N. ‘perestroika’ can take place. Jupiter in Libra is most complementary to Saturn as this latter planet is exalted in Libra, representing the judicial mind. Essentially the combination of these two planetary returns will give the inspiration and expansiveness of thought (Jupiter) to bring in new laws (Saturn) that can be consolidated into a new working structure (Saturn in Cancer). At least this is the potential – whether it can be achieved remains to be seen. In the U.N. chart for October, Mars is also in Cancer, conjunct Saturn. Mars is the ruler of the sixth ray of Devotion and Idealism and governs the solar plexus centre, the chakra associated with the emotional body. Cancer is the sign of feeling, hence Mars placed here can be extraordinarily sensitive or emotionally reactive. At a personality level, a Saturn-Mars conjunction in Cancer can be enormously frustrating in terms of the free expression of the feelings. In this sign Saturn is in ‘detriment’ and Mars ‘falls’. Hence this conjunction is most poignant, representing collectively all that is unredeemed or ‘unsalvaged’ in Humanity, as well as the ‘Harmony through Conflict’ that we endure under the Fourth Ray. There is a continual harmonising of the pairs of opposites as we spiral up the evolutionary ladder from the gross to eventually the most refined. Pluto and the Quake Although Pluto was not necessarily that ‘prominent’ astrologically (it rules the ascendant in the Macquarie Rise chart), its handiwork is evident everywhere. When we witness the horror of death from the ruthless forces of nature and hear the stories of those who can smell the bloated and rotting corpses, we know that we are on Pluto’s charnel ground. One particularly surreal scene on a news report was that of enormous outdoor morgue full of bodies and lumps of dry ice scattered around giving off smoke-like vapours – it could have been Dante’s inferno – Pluto’s ‘lesser burning ground’. Perhaps death is losing its ‘sting’ due to our increasing familiarity with it and maybe people are asking more questions about life’s deeper spiritual mysteries, whether there is any continuity, as for example the soul’s evolutionary progress. In the last ten years or so there has been a huge interest in forensic medicine reflected in innumerable TV shows (come to the lab and see whats on the slab!), as well as unprecedented mass forensic operations such as 9/11, the Bali bombing and now the vastest of all – the victims of the tsunami. This ‘forensic focus’ has much to do with the Virgo polarity of the Pisces age, the detailed minutae of human and scientifically assisted observation and investigation. It also relates to many who were born in the Pluto in Virgo generation who are now coming into their own. With such a focus one has to hope that it is all ‘going somewhere’ in terms of the deeper questions being asked, of psychic or spiritual experiences with the dearly departed and so on. (One such case reported was the ‘ghosts’ of the still traumatised dead - phoning their loved ones in Thailand!) It has been an emotional tsunami for world, not unlike
the response to 9/11 but on an unprecedented scale, almost swamping
other areas of world crisis like Iraq into the background. Pluto is
associated with the solar plexus centre and assists in the purification
and purging of that chakra before those forces are lifted up to the
heart centre – hence the new symbol of Pluto as the vertical up-pointing
arrow. Pluto’s transit through Sagittarius has had much to
do with bringing many old religious hatreds to the surface, particularly
the sixth ray-ruled religions of Islam and Christianity. The irony of
Aceh as the quake epicentre and hub of one of the greatest Islam-Christian
conflicts in the world for the past 27 years, I am sure is not lost
on any of us. It has been estimated that the largest loss of life has
occurred here – over 100,000. Of course we could say that they live
on the tectonic plate boundary so this is just a physical and coincidental
occurrence, yet we may wish to consider the following: The Manu and the Christ work together and currently many people are being forced to work together. The Pope commented that he hopes the disaster may lead to democratic reform and ‘everlasting goodwill and peace’. The quake has touched many other nations where internal politics has been ongoing like Aceh: Sri Lanka and the Tamil rebels, Somalia etc. Currently many militant Islamic groups are moving to Aceh to render aid, warning the Australians and Americans not to interfere in their regional conflict. There are many Christian-based groups such as World Vision rendering assistance and some Muslims see that as a threat to their religion. It is interesting to note amongst the unarmed Australian and American military personnel helping out with food and medicine, one American airman was prompted to remark that he felt ‘a new sense of service’. This is something that is being recognised right across the board and is one of the positive qualities emerging from this disaster. Are we really being that generous? In Australia there has been an unprecedented and genuinely generous response from both the public and the government. One has to ask why now and not before, is this just a one-off? Some argue that the government has various motives for offering its assistance but we must be careful of cynicism at this stage. Is it because of the drama of the tsunami or are there other forces at work? While some are indulging themselves in an orgy of self-congratulation (worse than Oscar night!), and feel-good giving, marvelling at how ‘generous’ we are, commentators point to the ongoing crises that other countries like Africa are enduring yet there has been little response by comparison to the tsunami. We could of course consider how much we spent at the Boxing Day sales or the Melbourne Cup betting on horses in just one day ($166.8 million, 51 million on the main race!). As a nation, Australia spends over $13 billion a year on all forms of gambling. (This must be related to the fact that esoterically her Capricorn Sun is in the fifth house!) A degree of co-measurement lends some relativity to the situation. Hopefully the tsunami disaster has created a longer term awareness of the plight of ‘third world’ countries - so that the wealthier West does not polarise itself so acutely in ignoring their plight, committing itself to a longer term process of aid. Whatever criticisms, there is no doubt that
this disaster has evoked a genuine heartfelt response and has brought
the world closer together in many ways. This is of course a trend in
other disasters and times of great conflict in human history. Another factor in Australia’s ‘generosity’ is transiting Jupiter’s exact trine to Pluto, at the time of the tsunami, from the sixth house of service to the second house of resources respectively. Also, Australia’s Venus/MC line, indicating friendly relations with foreign nations runs straight through Aceh. Tim Costello, director of World Vision said that it was a ‘profoundly moral and defining moment in Australian history’. Australia’s chart has five Sagittarian planets plus the north node and this sign is known for its expansiveness and generosity, particularly via Jupiter, planet of largesse and plenty. The transit of Pluto approaches Australia’s Jupiter and solar directed Mars by 4 degrees, an orb which many astrologers say has plenty of influence. If this is the case then we may see Australians digging even deeper when the exact conjunction kicks in for the whole of 2006. Also, Jupiter, Mercury and Chiron in Sagittarius all oppose Neptune in the Australian chart, bringing in the theme of the sea again. Both the eighth and second houses tenanted by these planets relate to money and finances. Capricorn the Sea-Goat: Varuna and Neptune, the Sea Gods The period of Christmas Day between the two earthquakes was also the first day after the three day solstice period which celebrates the rebirth of the Sun from its lowest ebb – at least in the northern hemisphere. In ancient days the “Cave of Mithras” was the birthplace of the Sun at the Winter Solstice in the sign of the Sea-Goat - this cave was continued as the symbolic birthplace of the Christ. The Sumero-Babylonian god Ea had the head and upper body of a goat with the lower body of a fish, as represented today in the Capricorn glyph. Ea was connected with work, wisdom and the instruction of mankind. Pan the deva entity of nature is identified with earthy Capricorn, a sign which has the ability to bring spirit into matter, hence its association with earth magic and magic in general. In ancient
legend Pan was being pursued and leapt into the Nile trying to turn
himself into a fish to escape - only achieving half his transformation.
Other names for the sea-goat were, 'The Antelope of the Subterranean
Ocean', 'He of the vast intellect', 'Lord of the Sacred Eye', 'God of
Wisdom'. Capricorn the sea-goat is also ‘Makara’, the Sanskrit
word for Capricorn[11]: It is interesting that there were significant dolphin and whale strandings in Tasmania at the time of the Macquarie Rise Quake. Tasmania had 170 strandings (thousands of whales and dolphins) in 2004 and one theory suggests that they are being disoriented by seismic soundings taken for oil and gas explorations. Other theories speculate as to whether these seismic soundings cause earthquakes. Venus
is the hierarchical ruler of Capricorn and relates to the mystery of
Makara – the mystery of the lunar and solar angelic beings who constitute
our lower and higher selves respectively. Venus is of course the ruler
of the fifth ray of Concrete Science a discipline well favoured by Capricorn.
The letter Ma is equivalent to No. 5, and Kara means hand.
The mystery of Makara therefore, relates to the dual evolution of heart
and mind that are inextricably entwined: Neptune
is the vehicle of Varuna and ‘falls’ in Capricorn: Capricorn which is known for being emotionally unexpressive at times, sits opposite Cancer, one of the most emotionally expressive signs of the zodiac and ruled esoterically by Neptune. The recent tsunami not only had Saturn and Chiron prominent in opposition between Capricorn-Cancer, but is also symbolic of the emotional tsunami that has engulfed the world. It may even have prompted some searching questions as to why it happened and the existence of the soul. A most
memorable emotional response like this occurred at the death of Lady
Diana when transiting Neptune opposed Venus in Capricorn in the British
horoscope. Based upon the above it would seem that the recent quake
and tsunami has more esoteric connotations. From the
above statements it could be deduced that Makara and the Christ are
one and the same; the Christ as an embodiment of Love as transmitted
from Neptune; the Christ as a symbol of the Capricorn initiate who has
been ‘transfigured’: Perhaps
the recent tsunami is reflective of the approach of the Christ and the
Hierarchy closer to the physical plane. The highly refined forces that
They carry create conflict when meeting with the grosser earthly forces.
This process has been going on since the world wars from last century,
which were also partly to do with this ‘Great Approach’. There are of
course other reasons that earthquakes occur. Of course activity has occurred and will continue to occur in these regions. With reference to the devas it is interesting that the Sabian Symbol degree (26) for Saturn in water-sign Cancer is “A nature spirit dancing in the iridescent mist of a waterfall”. Rudhyar discusses the spiritual or psychic forces related to water, symbolising the constant flow of vital energies. [23] “One such centre is to be found at the North Pole, and two more are located within the planetary sphere, and frequently the inflow of force or energy to these internal centres (via the polar centre) results in those disasters we call earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.”[24] “Briefly it might be said that [a] cosmic and systemic cause … responsible for the present world crisis and the present difficult world situation [is] a shift in the Earth's polarity, due to the pull of a great cosmic centre. This powerfully affects the Earth's orientation and is responsible for the present earthquakes, and for the volcanic eruptions and the many earthquakes during the past one hundred and fifty years.” [25] The Sumatran Quake was said to have caused the Earth to wobble on its axis even more than usual, and the planet is still ‘ringing like a bell’, apparently for a much longer period than in previous quakes. In this era of racial synthesis, one may speculate on deeper esoteric reasons for the quake. “Another type [of electricity] deals with the electrical
phenomenon which finds its expression in the light which man has somewhat
harnessed, in the phenomena such as thunder storms and the manifestation
of lightning, with the aurora borealis, and in the production of earthquakes
and all volcanic action. All these manifestations are based
on electrical activity of some kind, and have to do with the "soul of
things," or with the essence of matter …” [26] [1] The Moon was close to the last degree of
Gemini in the Sumatran Boxing Day quake and in the last degree
for the tsunami per se. The Moon was in the last degree of Gemini for
the 9/11 disaster.
