Gemini the Twins

Relationships, Masonry and Avatars



"I recognise my other self and in the waning of that self,
I grow and glow."

Gemini is the third of the first three most important spiritual festivals for the year (Aries, Taurus, Gemini) – that set the tone for the annual cycle. That which has been initiated in Aries, consolidated upon in Taurus, is disseminated in Gemini. These three signs are the subjective influences that lie behind all manifestation, hence all that can be effectively inspired, thought, imagined, visualised and built during this period - at a personal or group level - has a good chance of coming into manifestation.

This is of course the white magic that is learnt and manifested as we tune into the frequencies of the zodiac signs during their annual rhythm. Increasingly now we are becoming aware of the power of the group (Aquarius) and what can be effected in global meditation, especially when the group stands in the ‘open gate’ of the full moon period, a few days before and after the exact moment of the full moon; and also particularly with a growing awareness of those Beings who assist in the subtle worlds, whether they be the Masters or the angelic beings who assist them.

The Tibetan Master Djwhal Khul, writing through Alice A. Bailey, constantly reminds us of the pairs of opposites that must be balanced for those who are consciously treading the Path. Many of the signs of the zodiac are dualistic in their expression, in fact the six pairs of signs represent this oscillation of opposites, yet Gemini the Twins creates the strongest awareness of polarity. Gemini links as a third point in a triangle with all the zodiacal pairs, seeking to creating harmony and synthesis. Hence, Gemini is one of the most important because its influence lies behind all the other signs.

“...[Gemini] is sometimes called the "constellation of the resolution of duality into a fluid synthesis. Governing as it does all the pairs of opposites in the zodiac, it preserves the magnetic interplay between them, keeping them fluid in their relations, in order eventually to facilitate their transmutation into unity, for the two must finally become the One. It should be remembered that—from the angle of the final development of the twelve zodiacal potencies—the twelve opposites must become the blended six, and this is brought about by the fusion in consciousness of the polar opposites. Pause and consider this phrasing. The opposites eternally remain from the point of view of human reason, but to the initiate whose intuition is functioning they constitute but six great potencies, because he has achieved "the freedom of the two," as it is sometimes called.”[1]

Note the phrase, ‘from the angle of the final development of the twelve zodiacal potencies’; this is related to the last twelve lifetimes for the almost liberated pilgrim, spent in each of the signs and as symbolised in the Labours of Hercules.

What is this ‘fluid synthesis’ that brings about ‘resolution of duality’? It is the energy of Mercury, the personality or exoteric ruler of Gemini and also that of the second ray of Love-Wisdom, the only ray that is transmitted through this sign – by Mercury as well as esoteric ruler Venus.

Gemini and Mercury are most compatible: Gemini is a mutable sign that can adapt to most circumstances and is the chameleon that can be anything to anyone, whilst Mercury is the quicksilver messenger with wings on his feet. Mercury delivers the message from mind to brain, from higher self to lower self, from twin to twin. Mercury is the engaging principle behind speech and communication that leads to friendship and relationship. Mercury renders Gemini open to impression, clothing and reflecting those impressions with speech. (Hence Mercury ‘motor-mouth’ and talkative Gemini.) Mercury is the principle that represents ideas in their rawest elemental essence, before they come under Saturn’s influence and are shaped into thought-forms.

Mercury is the ruler of the fourth ray of Harmony through Conflict, the major ray that conditions Humanity as a whole, whilst Gemini is the main sign that rules over humanity. Mercury is on the ‘even ray’ love-wisdom line’ and hence is a good distributor of the second ray that streams through Gemini.

Venus is the soul ruler of Gemini and as the goddess of harmony and beauty, brings about synthesis upon that final frontier of balancing the opposites, the mental plane. Venus is the ruler of the fifth ray of science and is mental in its expression; its more well known astrological expression as the goddess of love and sex, is what has filtered down to the astral plane - nevertheless the theme of union and unity remains.

Gemini is represented by the two pillars, the gateway to the forces of Sirius, that Great Life that is to this solar system, what the soul is to the personality - and to which most of Humanity will return when they have liberated themselves from Earth incarnations. The indigo second ray of love-wisdom is that which characterises the energy pouring from Sirius and, combined with Gemini as a conduit for the second ray, creates a powerful  expression of the ‘Cosmic Christ’ - whose ‘head’ resides in Gemini.[2]

The Gemini symbol is also Jachin and Boaz, the two columns of Masonry through which the candidate for the mysteries of initiation passes. Gemini rules over the ‘FC’ or Fellowcraft initiation, also called the second initiation in other traditions. The second degree is intimately related to the demonstrated control of the desire or astral body, hence the FC relates to Gemini balancing the opposites upon the astral plane, with the subsequent inflow of love-wisdom that ensues from that integration and alignment.

“The formless nature of the influences of Gemini is strikingly borne out if the significance of Masonry is studied. This world-wide institution was—as I have earlier told you—organised under the influence and impulse of this sign and is governed by it in a most unusual manner. The format or exoteric symbolism of Masonry has frequently been changed during the millennia of years through which it has been active. Its present Jewish colouring is relatively modern and not necessarily enduring, but its significance and its history of unfoldment are the history of the indwelling Christ consciousness and of that inner light, and this must unalterably be continued. That which has entered through the two pillars of Hercules, the disciples (Jachin and Boaz), and through the sign Gemini, has entered to stay.”[3]

The formless nature of Gemini is also borne out by the fact that it rules the etheric body. It is the creation of forms in the etheric that eventually leads to physical manifestation, whether it is the thoughtform of a meditator or the subtle forms created in the magical ritual that unfolds in a Masonic lodge. The formlessness of Gemini allows for the adaptability mentioned earlier. Hence as the third major subjective spiritual festival of the year, its work is to distribute the new impulse throughout the etheric body of the planet.

Gemini is also a noted sign of healing as it rules the hands through which energy that pours from the heart is directed. The hands are also symbolic of the service that one twin renders to the other or of humanity to one another. Hence Gemini is fundamentally a sign of relationships, aided well with its esoteric ruler Venus. The Gemini full moon period is also called the Festival of Goodwill or the Festival of Humanity:

“The Festival of Humanity. This will be the festival of the spirit of humanity—aspiring to approach nearer to God, seeking conformity to the divine will to which the Buddha called attention, dedicated to the expression of goodwill which is the lowest aspect of love to which Christ called attention and of which He was the perfect expression. It will be the day pre-eminently on which the divine nature of man will be recognized and his power to express goodwill and to establish right human relations (because of his divinity) will be stressed. On this festival we are told Christ has for nearly two thousand years represented humanity and has stood before the Hierarchy as the God-man, the leader of His people and "the Eldest in a great family of brothers". This will, therefore, be a festival of deep invocation and appeal; it will express a basic aspiration towards fellowship and for human and spiritual unity; it will represent the effect in the human consciousness of the work of the Buddha and of the Christ. It will be held at the time of the Full Moon of Gemini.”[5]

Hence Gemini the sign of relationships. Note the phrase, ‘it will represent the effect in the human consciousness of the work of the Buddha and of the Christ.’ In other words, the first two festivals of Easter and Wesak (Aries and Taurus) represent the Christ and the Buddha respectively. In Gemini they both come together as the Twins, to distribute that which has been generated in the previous two signs.

The Buddha and the Christ have worked with one another for millennia and constitute the pristine spiritual lineage that has guided the planet for aeons. Soon, in the not too distant future, approaching the period of the Sixth Rootrace, the Buddha will relinquish his role on Earth permanently, moving onto another ‘cosmic path’, whilst the Christ will assume the Buddha’s mantle. This will be an unprecedented event in Earth history and reflects success in healing a schism that has existed between the Moon and Earth chain evolutions for millions of years. Hence the Twins will blend into a Unity, for the two hemispheres which they both represent respectively, East and West, will have merged in consciousness by then and the world will be a far more unified and co-operative place.

To repeat and paraphrase an earlier passage, Gemini represents the Festival of the spirit of humanity aspiring toward a connection with the Divine, searching for alignment with the Purpose of Deity and determined to express goodwill in right human relations. Indeed, Venus as Gemini soul ruler and ruler of the fifth ray of science, governs the Science of Right Human Relationships, one of the key evolutionary unfoldments in the imminent Aquarian cycle. The United Nations is forever the great hope and symbol of where Humanity is heading on this theme and its exoteric chart has a Gemini moon.

Yet the Buddha and the Christ have other helpers, not just the great Chohans and Masters of Wisdom with their disciples and initiates who work in the various ashrams residing on the buddhic plane. There are also certain avatars who cooperate within the karmic allowance of this Earth Scheme, yet whose origins lay far beyond it. It is interesting how the world is still enthralled by a movie called Avatar, reflecting that which is permeating into human consciousness.

“...an avatar is a Ray of effulgent and perfected glory, clothing itself in matter for the purpose of service.  All avatars in the strict sense of the word are liberated souls...”[6]

From one viewpoint, an avatar is the embodiment of a ray force. There are various types of avatars: 1. Cosmic Avatars, 2. Solar Avatars, 3. Inter-planetary Avatars, 4. Planetary Avatars, 5. Human Avatars. When we speak of the synthetic qualities of Gemini, the Avatar of Synthesis comes to mind:

“The Avatar of Synthesis, Who is working in cooperation with the Christ, is one of Them.  Bear in mind that these extra-planetary Avatars have not arrived at Their high state of spiritual unfoldment on our planet or even in our solar system.  Their origin, source and spiritual relationships are a great mystery even to the planetary Logoi—to Whose help They go when the invocative appeal of any planet is adequate. 

Think not that They come to put wrong right or to arrest evil.  A few, a very few, may do so, but They work along the line of the seven ray energies in the solar system and produce certain energy effects desired at any particular time; the constructive work of the Avatar of Synthesis will be apparent to you in the name He is known by; He is coming to the Earth in order to further the manifestation of unity, of oneness and of inter-relation, and He comes, therefore, to wield and apply first ray energy. 

He will charge or galvanise the three groups—the directing Agents in Shamballa, the Nirmanakayas and the New Group of World Servers—with dynamic energy and, in a mysterious way, relate them to each other so that a new synthesis and alignment will be present upon the Earth.  All these Avatars embody energy to the extent that any particular planet is capable of receiving it.”[7]

The purest and most powerful spiritual forces emanating from Shamballa, have in planetary history only recently been allowed to impact Humanity directly with the force that embodies the first ray of will and power. Hitherto the Great White Brotherhood was a shield or filter for those forces. And so now the Avatar of Synthesis who ‘wields and applies first ray energy’, and who ‘works in co-operation with the Christ’, catalyses this cycle.

The first ray energy of the Avatar is filtered by the Love-Wisdom quality of the Christ so that the energy is not too destructive. The Aries festival belongs to the Christ, but in a very unique way (averred to earlier), so does the festival of Gemini. Besides directing the very abstract forces in Shamballa and the angelic beings (Nirmanakayas), the New Group of World Servers (the spiritually aware and soul conscious of the world), also get a great boost.

When duality is in control, Gemini in its lower aspect is divisive, two-faced, manipulative and destructive in speech. Yet when the synthetic juices are flowing, it is quite the opposite:

“The separateness of humanity, and its selfishness, had reached such vast proportions [pre-World War II], and its effects were so completely dominated by the Forces of Evil, that—in response to the massed inchoate demand of humanity—the Hierarchy called for spiritual interposition. The endless selfish propaganda, in speech or in writing, most of it materialistic, nationalistic and basically untrue and wrongly motivated [has much changed today?], became such a clamour that it reached to spheres usually impervious to the sounds of earth; the Avatar of Synthesis was called in to aid. The main objective and the immediate task of the Christ is to bring to an end the separateness which exists between man and man, family and family, community and community, and nation and nation.”[8]

And of course in the past sixty years or so, despite some glaring discrepancies, there is a growing and unprecedented co-operation within Humanity being brought about through various factors:

1. Natural disasters: Volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes. Never before have we seen so many other nations come to the aid of a nation in times of emergency, not only through financial aid, but with substantial teams of specialists donating their services.

2. Human-caused disasters: Oil spills, pollution, global warming, agricultural crises; the growing recognition that the Earth is one organism that does not recognise national boundaries. The evolving understanding of cause and effect in one part of the world or the other.

3. Telecommunications and technology, the internet, social networking. Again, more boundaries have broken down. The internet is the very Gemini symbol of the etheric body of the planet.

4. Trade, commerce and sport – all factors that contribute to a great movement in the tide of Humanity - the mingling toward synthesis of races, ideologies and cultures.

5. As a result of the foregoing, a growing compassion, tolerance and understanding, despite deep-seated unresolved cultural, religious and race differences: The drama created by the minority tends to distract from the fact expressing in the majority.

Yet that which is still deeply entrenched serves to point the way toward synthesis because the opposites are so dramatic and clearly defined. (This connects to the earlier mentioned drama of the Fourth Ray of Harmony through Conflict.)

“The Spirit of Synthesis, working through the great first ray Avatar (the Avatar of Synthesis) is closer to the Earth than ever before, and the clarity which will emerge in the Light of His Presence is already available; the tendency to integration can therefore be more easily fostered and a new synthesis attained among men.  Before, however, integration and synthesis are possible, this first ray energy must work to destroy all that prevents integration and all that is hindering a needed synthesis.  Human beings themselves must also destroy the prejudices, the animosities and the fixed ideas which have prevented synthesis, which have created cleavages and hindered right understanding.[9] ... the consequent outpouring potency of the Christ will be so great that the distinction between love and hate, between aggression and freedom, and between greed and sharing will be made lucidly clear to the eyes and minds of all men and, therefore, the distinction between good and evil will be made equally clear ...”[10]
