"I come forth and from the plane of mind, I rule."
Cuzco, Peru: Home
of the Sun God
Aries is one arm of the cardinal cross that it shares with Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. The same significance of this southern hemisphere festival can be applied for Capricorn in the northern hemisphere. The cardinal cross traces the journey of the Sun through the two equinoxes and two solstices every year. Perhaps this is why Cusco was regarded as the 'four-sided sun empire'.
At the festival, the son of the sun or the Inti Churin appears, emerges from the Koricancha shrine, inviting the people to attend the ceremony that ends nine hours later at Sacsayhuaman, the megalithic complex sitting at the top of the hill overlooking Cusco.
The Incans however, were much later inhabitants of Cusco and even stated that they were not the builders of the extraordinary temples and fortresses, they simply inhabited them, making their own additions - that can be easily identified.
Whilst the Incans are a culture similar to the Mexican Aztecs - hundreds of thousands of years old, they are descendants of far older and more advanced cultures that have their origins with the likes of the Mayans. The planetary centre known as Shamballa had its first outpost in the centre of South America, no doubt not far from where Peru is today. The second outpost of Shamballa,
"... was to be found in the ancient Maya institutions, and the basic worship of the sun as the source of life in the hearts of all men." (It was only in the later degeneration of the races that the spiritual teaching was distorted and materialised, resulting in the ripping out of the physical heart in blood sacrifice ceremonies.)
Gold is the metal of the Sun, the most sought after commodity in the history of the world, no less so in Cusco:
"The ruins of the temple of the Sun at Cuzco are yet imposing ... the narratives of the [Spanish] conquerors themselves, they found it, on their arrival, a kind of a fairy-tale castle. With its enormous circular stone wall completely encompassing the principal temple, chapels and buildings, it is situated in the very heart of the city ...
... Aqueducts opened within this sacred enclosure and within it were gardens, and walks among shrubs and flowers of gold and silver, made in imitation of the productions of nature. It was attended by 4,000 priests. The ground for 200 paces around the temple, was considered holy, and no one was allowed to pass within this boundary but with naked feet. Besides this great temple, there were 300 other inferior temples at Cuzco.
When Cuzco was the capital of Peru, it contained a temple of the sun, famed far and near for its magnificence. It was roofed with thick plates of gold, and the walls were covered with the same precious metal; the eave-troughs were also of solid gold. In the west wall the architects had contrived an aperture in such a way that when the sunbeams reached it, it focused them inside the building. Stretching like a golden chain from one sparkling point to another, they encircled the walls, illuminating the grim idols, and disclosing certain mystic signs at other times invisible. It was only by understanding these hieroglyphics—identical with those which may be seen to this day on the tomb of the Incas—that one could learn the secret of the tunnel and its approaches."
Temple of the Sun, Cusco (with church built on top) Temple of the Sun, Macchu Piccu.
And in modern times, Cusco has lost none of its lustre, being an extraordinary tourist goldmine for Peru. The spiritual forces that were anchored and still linger in these ancient places, attract millions of visitors every year, tasting some of the mystic past and marveling at the megalithic constructions, whose building techniques still cannot be explained satisfactorily by modern science today.
When touring the ruins, it is somewhat amusing to hear the tour guides explaining how the rocks were cut and transported (one rock at Saqsaywaman weighs an estimated 300 tons!), explanations that ignore the possibility of superior technologies and the vast antiquity of the constructions:
"We are as ignorant of the races that built these cyclopean structures ... who carved upon hundreds of miles of walls, of monuments, monoliths and altars, these weird hieroglyphics, these groups of animals and men, pictures of an unknown life and lost arts—scenes so fantastic and wild, at times, that they involuntarily suggest the idea of a feverish dream, whose phantasmagoria at the wave of some mighty magician’s hand suddenly crystallized into granite, to bewilder the coming generations for ever and ever."
The Sun is one of the rulers of the heart centre and represents the spiritual life thread anchored there. It has an interesting role, embodying both the life and love principles. Cusco would most likely qualify as the heart centre of Peru and Lima, as the political capital, is most likely the head centre.
It was from Cusco and Tiahuanaco (on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca), that the great Manco Capac disseminated civilization. Manco Capac was a Manu for the South American races, the equivalent of the Buddha, Osiris, Quetzalcohuatl of the Mexicans and Votan of the Mayans. He first made his appearance on an island in Lake Titicaca, where he began to disseminate civilization:
"Collecting together the various races from all parts of Peru, the divine couple then divided their labour Manco Capac taught men agriculture, legislation, architecture, and arts; while Mama Oella [his wife] instructed the women in weaving, spinning, embroidery, and housekeeping. It is from this celestial pair that the Incas claimed their descent; and yet, they [Incans] were utterly ignorant of the people who built the stupendous and now ruined cities which cover the whole area of their empire..."
The passage, 'collecting together
the various races from all parts of Peru', sounds like the period after one of
the Atlantean floods, when the scattered races were gathered up again and given
direction and tuition.
Last night tens of thousands of people attended the ceremony in pouring rain, a sea of wet plastic raincoats and umbrellas - a great fanfare, yet solemn devotion. Me, I eventually escaped to my hotel drenched, to a meal of nice hot trucha y papas! (Trout and potatoes.) Apparently on Good Friday, abstinence is not practiced, instead twelve traditional dishes are feasted upon. (I wonder about the 12 symbolism, if it is connected to the zodiac.) Likewise on Easter Sunday, the feast will continue, the day I will be er... ascending ... in an aeroplane back to the USA.
Obviously this is the Roman Catholic
version of Christianity that tends to put the emphasis upon the blood/agony
aspect of the crucifixion, instead of the resurrection/ascension - see later in
ray is the second ray of love-wisdom, counting backward esoterically, and it is
this second ray that will have a major expression in the sixth rootrace. (It is
no accident that Brazil is the only country in the world listed as
second ray personality.) One of DK's prophecies follows, bearing in mind that
the Hierarchy's plans change or it might have already tried,
Well, John Paul II may have had a good try (see author's essay) and the current Pope may be filling in for a better candidate. Master Jesus' plans are crucial as there are so many features about the Roman Catholic Church that are anathema to the spirit of Christ,
"a. An intensely materialistic attitude. The Church of Rome stands for great stone structures—cathedrals, churches, institutions, convents, monasteries. In order to build them, the policy down the centuries has been to drain the money out of the pockets of rich and poor alike. The Roman Catholic Church is a strictly capitalistic church. The money gathered into its coffers supports a powerful ecclesiastical hierarchy and provides for its many institutions and schools.
b. A far-reaching and far-sighted political program in which temporal power is the goal and not the welfare of the little people. The present program of the Catholic Church [mid 20th century] has definite political implications; their attitude to Communism has in it the seeds of another world war. The political activities of the Catholic Church have not built for peace, no matter under what guise they are presented.
c. A planned policy whereby the mass of the people are kept in intellectual ignorance and, through this ignorance, are naturally to be found among the reactionary and conservative forces which are so powerfully at work resisting the new age with its new civilization and more enlightened culture. Blind faith and complete confidence in the priest and in the Vatican are regarded as spiritual duties.
The Roman Catholic Church stands entrenched and unified against any new and evolutionary presentation of truth to the people; its roots are in the past but it is not growing into the light; its vast financial resources enable it to menace the future enlightenment of mankind under the cloak of paternalism and a colorful outer appearance which hides a crystallization and an intellectual stupidity which must inevitably spell its eventual doom, unless the faint stirrings of new life following the advent of Pope John XXIII can be nourished and developed."
Exaltation of the
Sun in Aries
The Sun is the symbol of the seed of life that first emerges in Aries, the first impulse of spirit manifesting into matter. The 'life of God' is 'swung into activity' by Aries ruler Mars, and achieves 'consummation' in the opposite sign of Libra, where Saturn is exalted.
Saturn in Libra organises the impulse of Aries into geometrical forms upon the mental plane, eventually enabling precipitation of spirit into matter. This is why The Tibetan has called Libra a sign of 'practicality'.
Uranus is also involved potently in this Aries-Libra pair of opposites because it is the hierarchical ruler of Aries and the soul ruler of Libra. Uranus rules the seventh ray of ceremonial order or magic, and is connected to the seventh plane, the physical.
Hence Uranus, along with Saturn's exaltation in Libra, helps bring into expression those 'ideas from the mind of god' in Aries. The seventh ray is the ray of geometry, assisting Saturn's creation of thought-forms and reminding us of the well-known saying from that great avatar Plato, 'God geometrises'.
“Uranus embodies the energy of the seventh ray and its work is analogous to that of Mercury [soul ruler of Aries], for the seventh ray is the ray which relates spirit and matter and brings together electric fire [spirit] and fire by friction [matter], thus producing manifestation.
Uranus leads the soul to the burning ground during the final stages of the Path, when the fire of Aries and the fires engendered through the potency of Uranus produce the flaming heat of the final burning ground. Through this burning ground, the initiate has finally to pass. Uranus rules the occult Way and is, in an esoteric sense, connected with the Hierophant of the Mysteries of Initiation.”
The element fire is connected to the
mental plane - thought is a fiery energy in its essence. Aries rules the head
and brain that does the thinking, hence the injunction "I come forth from
the plane of mind and I rule."
Yet the highest expression of Aries is connected to the intuition or buddhi, which will eventually supercede the mind. The fires of mind will be replaced by the airy intuition.
Jesus and the
Fourth Initiation: What Humanity Can Be
What does this previous passage
mean? - "Uranus leads the soul to the burning ground during the final stages of the Path, when
the fire of Aries and the fires engendered through the potency of Uranus
produce the flaming heat of the final burning ground. Through this burning
ground, the initiate has finally to pass."
"The life of the man who takes the fourth initiation, or the Crucifixion, is usually one of great sacrifice and suffering. It is the life of the man who makes the Great Renunciation, and even exoterically it is seen to be strenuous, hard, and painful. He has laid all, even his perfected personality, upon the altar of sacrifice, and stands bereft of all. All is renounced, friends, money, reputation, character, standing in the world, family, and even life itself."
The life of Jesus is an outstanding example of what all humanity can eventually be - possessed of an unambiguous loving kindness, wisdom and an unshakeable will. In the words of that other great initiate St. Paul, "Unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ."
Because of the nature of evolution, the testings for initiation are increased in parallel with the unfoldment of consciousness. Fully recognising this fact, Jesus said,
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."
The 'Father' is the monadic consciousness attained after the fourth initiation when the causal body of the soul is destroyed after aeons of serving as a mediating principle between pure spirit and matter:
"Then disintegration or destruction ensues; the causal body vanishes in a blaze of electrical fire, and the real "man" or self is abstracted from the three world-bodies."
The first ray of will or power is the major ray that pours through this first sign of the zodiac. Aries is a sign of new life yet also a sign of death, the fire of Aries burns and destroys all that hinders the path. Pluto, co-ruler of the first ray, is the Lord of Death and is activated in this sign. Hence the Sun nourishes, yet burns and destroys, and combined with first ray Pluto and Uranus, 'produces the flame and heat of the final burning ground.' Fire is an agent of purification and,
"Through the lesser fire of mind, the "jungles of experience are set on fire and dissolve in flames - and then the Path stands clear and unobstructed vision is achieved.""
Somewhat paradoxically, it is also through this fiery purification that the mind is released and the soul ruler of Aries - Mercury, becomes the intuitive illuminating principle throughout the life experience. In light of the three rulers of Aries, Mercury is the mediating principle between Uranian spirit and Martial matter.
It is these combination of factors that allows Aries to 'take a stand', to set an example, to be that idea in manifestation. It is said that death by fire or burning in Aries releases the initiate into the planetary centre, Shamballa. Jesus most certainly made his 'last stand' after running the gamut of purification and rigorous testings of persecution; of being betrayed or let down by those closest to him in Gethsemane; and being completely misunderstood, leading him to say, "Father forgive them, they know not what they do."
Aries is the 'lamb of god', the 'lamb slain before the foundation of the world'; when the Christ overshadowed his disciple Jesus, a great cosmic event occurred, not just earthly; it was the end of the Age of Aries and the beginning of the Age of Pisces. For the first time ever in the history of humanity, a tiny thread of the Shamballa force was anchored on this planet:
"[The Christ's] greatest work ... the revelation of the Way of the Higher Evolution. This entails the bringing through of pure divine will and the relating of the spiritual Hierarchy to the great Council at Shamballa. It will be apparent to you, therefore, that He was the first to carry through—from stage to stage—the complete revelation of humanity to the Hierarchy and of the Hierarchy to Shamballa."
The esoteric teachings were given out to humanity because of their massed cry for more light. Most of us are mystics, have an intuitive understanding of spiritual matters, without necessarily understanding the how and why. The discipline of the path of esotericism or occultism gives that how and why, blending the ways of the heart and the head. Hence we must learn to live in the world of meaning, rejecting outer appearances and cultivate a regular meditation/reflectiveness that stays linked to source. We must learn through esoteric training to read between or behind the lines,
"The interpreters of the Gospel and many disciples of the Christian dispensation have singularly failed to grasp this revelation; they have laid the emphasis upon the death of the personality, whereas when Christ experienced the "great void of darkness" and chanted aloud the occult mantram "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me," he was recognising simultaneously the distinction between His "robe of glory" (symbolised by the partition of His garment by the Roman soldiery), and also calling the attention of all future disciples and initiates to the disappearance of the "middle principle," the soul; He was projecting (into the world consciousness) the recognition which must come of relation to the Father or the Monad. This great dissolution is culminated for us at the time of the third initiation when the Light of the Monad obliterates the light of the soul and the material atomic light of the threefold personality.
But—and here is the point—the recognition of this death and its effects is only symbolically enacted and recognised at the time of the fourth initiation, the Crucifixion. All lesser dissolutions, deaths, renunciations and disappearances of that to which the lower nature holds and is held, are enacted in relation to the accustomed aspects of form-life, and of conscious sensitivity and awareness; they are simply preparatory to and symbolic of the final great dissolution of the causal body, consummated at the Crucifixion. This leads to the resurrection or uprising of the personality-soul consciousness (duly fused and blended) into that of the monad. This is finally carried to the point of solar perfection at the Ascension initiation."
Hence, at every annual Easter festival,
we can 'set our hearts toward Jerusalem', not the literal city, but the 'place
of peace' within the heart that is intimately connected to the soul's path. We
can resolve, make a stand, a new year's resolution - to practice 'all lesser
dissolutions, deaths, renunciations and disappearances' that will lead
eventually to liberation.
In this individualistic and somewhat prideful Fifth Rootrace that has been fuelled by excessive manas or mind, many have lost a due sense of proportion in placing themselves correctly upon the path. This has resulted in the misuse of esoteric teachings and an over-estimation of the next point that lies before them.
This is at once a blatant and very subtle problem, where the arrogance of the Western mind wants to be at the mountain summit without putting in the 'hard yards' upon the lower slopes. This has been mentioned in past missives yet it never hurts to repeat because, as a mentally developed race, we are faced with a battery of illusions that assail us from every quarter - as we seek to balance the pairs of opposites upon the mental plane. It takes much discrimination and the killing out of ego to ascertain where one is on the Path.
It's enough to have to deal with
glamour upon the astral plane and have that compounded by illusion on the
mental plane, yet that is where most of us find ourselves, dealing with
kama-manas or desire-mind. The eventual transcendence of all these glamours and
illusions leads us step by step to the triumph of each initiation.
"It was also to the magnetic power of the will that Christ referred when He said, "I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto Me." This had no reference to the crucifixion but to the magnetic will of the Christ to draw all men, through the life of the indwelling Christ in every heart, out of the world of material values into the world of spiritual recognitions. It did not relate to death but to life; it had no reference to the Cross but to the resurrection.
In the past, the keynote of the Christian religion has been death, symbolised for us in the death of Christ and much distorted by St. Paul in his effort to blend the new religion which Christ brought with the old blood religion of the Jews. In the cycle which Christ will inaugurate after His reappearance, the goal of all the religious teaching in the world will be the resurrection of the spirit in mankind; the emphasis will be upon the livingness of the Christ nature in every human being, and upon the use of the will in bringing about this living transfiguration of the lower nature."
Technically, 'ascension' concerns the sixth initiation, after the fifth degree (resurrection) where the candidate becomes a Master of the Wisdom. Jesus took the fifth initiation in his next incarnation as Apollonius of Tyana - ironically amongst the Romans!
The sixth degree is where the Master becomes a Chohan or equivalent, a custodian of a particular ray line of energy. The Christ, overshadowing his disciple Jesus, took the sixth initiation whilst Jesus took the fourth degree - a most unique and potent combination needed for that propitious moment in history.
Actually, the Christ also took the
seventh degree which is the level that Buddha has attained. Only a seventh
degree initiate can understand the words that the Christ spoke of, 'Life more
abundantly'. There are group of these sixth and seventh degree initiates who
operate as a group called the Nirmanakayas, mediating between the Masters of
Wisdom and Shamballa - but that exploration is beyond this discussion!
The eventual (sometimes
humiliating) realisation for this not insignificant group of individuals, is
that there will be many more lives of trial and error before their time is really
'due'; they must have earned their 'dues' or 'wages' to use the occult
Likewise, when a human has traversed all Earth experience and is transiting out of that realm altogether - as someone like Jesus when taking the fourth degree, the entire planet benefits: "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me."
Note the passage above, 'after His reappearance', pointing to a major factor unfolding within the planetary plan very soon:
"... in the hands of human beings today and in the immediate present, lies the destiny of the world and—if it may be reverently said—the immediate activity of the Christ. The agony of the war, and the distress of the entire human family led Christ, in the year 1945, to come to a great decision ... He announced to the assembled spiritual Hierarchy and to all His servants and disciples on Earth that He had decided to emerge again into physical contact with humanity, if they would bring about the initial stages of establishing right human relations..."
This is a profound statement and begs the question, has humanity sufficiently brought about the 'initial stages of right human relations' in the past seventy years? There is no question that great advances have been made in better, more loving relationships, but has it been enough? Between now and 2025 - humanity will discover, The Christ may well reappear - 'come from the clouds' (by aeroplane) and 'all eyes shall see him' (on television), speaking a language that all will understand...
